2014 Summer Music Series
It is often difficult to collect enough blood donations to meet patient needs during the summer months, when school is out and many families are away on vacation. Music Brings Life and the American Red Cross are working together to overcome this seasonal challenge.
Music Brings Life produced a series of free live music events in the summer of 2014 to promote blood awareness. Our Summer Music Series was held in Brooklyn Borough Hall Plaza and hosted by Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams. At each of these music events we held blood drives with our partner, the American Red Cross.
We collected a total of 71 units of lifesaving blood at our three summer blood drives. This was a huge success because it is difficult to collect enough blood donations to meet patient needs during the summer months, when school is out and many families are away on vacation. And we exceeded our goal of 50 units! We are grateful to everyone who came out to donate and help us save lives.
We kicked off our Summer Music Series in spectacular fashion on July 2. Our headline performer was Grammy Award winner Shaggy, who sang his Top 40 hits "It Wasn't Me," "Angel" and more.

The lunchtime crowd in Borough Hall Plaza also was treated to performances by Ruby Collins, Olivia from VH1's Love & Hip Hop, Phearnone, Star Laurel and Music Brings Life president and founder Keenan "Special" Bristol. Additionally, music was provided by DJ Magic and DJ Young Chow of Hot 97, our media sponsor.
We collected 23 units of blood at the July 2 event. Those who attended the concert were inspired to donate after learning about Music Brings Life's mission, which is to educate young people in the Black, Latino and Caribbean communities about the importance of donating blood.

Our second event was held on July 16 and the headliner was Brooklyn's own Ricky Blaze, known for his hits "Just You And I" and "Feel Free" featuring Red Cafe and Nicki Minaj.
Also performing were Ruby Collins, Suave Luciano, Phearnone and Music Brings Life president and founder Keenan "Special" Bristol. Music was provided by DJ Spynfo of Hot 97.

We collected an additional 23 units of blood on July 16.
Our final event in the Summer Music Series was on August 13. Performing live was reggae/dancehall sensation QQ. He sang his hits, "One Drop," which topped the charts in 17 countries, and the reggae dance craze "Stookie."
Joining QQ on stage were Ruby Collins, K'reema, Phearnone, U'kno Tha Don, Shanelle Gabriel and Music Brings Life president and founder Keenan "Special" Bristol. Music was provided by DJ Magic of Hot 97, our media sponsor.
We closed our Summer Music Series and Blood Drives with a bang as we had our best showing: 25 units of lifesaving blood, bringing the total to 71 for the summer.
Every day is a chance to give hope. By giving blood, you will give patients in need hope and a chance to create memories that will last a lifetime.
